Episode
Kyoto and Nara are two of Japan's beautiful ancient capitals. Kyoto, with
its 1,200-year history, and Nara that is even older, are where Japanese culture
originated, and where people can rediscover the beautiful Japan that had been
passed down traditionally. Needless to say, places like Kyoto and Nara have
become rare these days. The landscape that spreads through the ancient villages
of Yamato, Asuka, and Ikaruga—including Tenpyo No Iraka of Toshodaiji Temple,
the growing of arrowroot starches in Yoshino, the making of the Nara ink, and
the great image of Buddha and the statue of Nio (the guardian gods of a temple
gate)—have long remained dear to the hearts and minds of the Japanese people.
The beauty, events, customs and traditions that are unveiled in these ancient
capital cities have been ticking away the time ever so elegantly. The graceful
landscape and the local residents’ daily lives that have remained unchanged over
the years are like precious jewels that shine through, even more so under
today’s businesslike atmosphere. |
