The format “Ranking the Stars”, a segment of TV Asahi’s popular variety show “London Hearts”, was sold to ANTV, a terrestrial broadcaster in Indonesia. The new Indonesian version has started its regular broadcast.
In “Ranking the Stars”, ten high profile celebrities such as actresses, TV personalities and comedians are invited to the studio and rank each other based on one distinct criterion. 100 men from the general public rank them on the same criterion. The talk will inevitably heat up around the difference of these two sets of rankings. “Ranking the Stars has been aired in Japan since 2004 for more than 100 times. In the show, the audience sometimes gets to hear the innermost feelings or embarrassing revelations from the celebrities. Some guests flare up in anger or start to cry. This true show of emotions contributes to the popularity of the program.
ANTV Indonesia celebrated its premiere on Saturday, December 8th, at 9:00 pm. The theme for the landmark first show was “The Woman who will most likely fail to get along with her Future-Mother-in-Law” and heated debate and exchanges unfolded. From now on it will become a regular program to be aired twice a week, Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 pm to 10:00pm.
The sales representative of Fremantle Media Asia which is the distribution outlet of “Ranking the Stars” in the Asian region has commented, “The audience ratings of the first and second weeks are very good. They have topped the ratings of the ANTV programs shown at the same time slots up till now. The minute-by-minute rating is increasing as the program proceeds, and we are hoping that it will get even more popular from now on.”
“Ranking the Stars” was licensed as a format to the Netherlands in 2006, and since then, local versions have been produced in Sweden, Poland, India and South Korea. Indonesia is the 10th country to produce a local version of the show.
Other “London Hearts” strands that have been sold as a format internationally are candid camera reality shows, such as “Stinger”, “Black Mail” and “Triangle”, and “Diamond Girl”, a project in which an ordinary girl is transformed into a shining beauty.
